In 1913, Richard Faris' grandfather moved to San Diego and started building single homes. His company, L.C. Anderson Co., played a significant role during WWII by constructing much of the Naval Training Center. Postwar, the company took on major projects like Sears North Park. He also co-founded an engineering contracting company, S.P. Rental, with Richard’s father, William "Dick" Faris.
After Dick Faris passed away in 1957, both companies were sold. In the early '70s, Richard Faris showed interest in construction, and Lawrence Anderson mentored and financed his first project. Richard then worked as a carpenter before partnering with James J. Wermers, founder of Wermers Multifamily, introducing them to public works construction.
In 1977, Richard Faris founded Faris Construction Company, contributing to historic rehabilitation projects in San Diego’s Gas Lamp District and building new structures like the Bank of San Diego’s 12th & G branch.
By 1982, with high-interest rates slowing down construction, Richard joined R.G. Fisher Constructors and later became an executive with Hensel Phelps Construction Co., establishing their Southern California office. This office has completed over $2 billion worth of construction.
After 20 years with Hensel Phelps, Richard Faris decided to return to serving smaller projects in Southern California, bringing advanced expertise typically found in larger projects.
